Reviving Fallow Lands: A New Chapter in Kerala’s Agricultural Journey

TIES Farmer Producer Company Ltd. (TIESFPC), promoted by the Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES) with the support of NABARD, was officially inaugurated on 2 November 2025 at the Chef Nalan Culinary Academy, Naalumanikkattu, Kottayam.
Hon. Sri. P. Prasad, Minister for Agriculture, Government of Kerala, inaugurated the company, describing it as “a new era in Kerala’s agricultural history” and expressing hope that modern technologies would inspire the younger generation to return to farming.
Sri. K. Roy Paul, Chairman and former UPSC Chairman, highlighted the crucial role of Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) in converting fallow lands into productive farms and promoting organic produce. Reji Varghese, Deputy General Manager, NABARD, emphasized collective efforts and farmer participation for stronger marketing outcomes.
Dr. N. Jayaraj, Government Chief Whip and Independent Director, distributed share certificates and shared the vision of adopting sustainable, futuristic practices in fallow land cultivation. Dr. Thomas Mar Timotheos, Secretary, Jacobite Church Synod and Independent Director, reflected on Kerala’s rich farming traditions and expressed hope that TIESFPC would help revive them through modern technology.
Dr. Punnen Kurian, Managing Director, TIESFPC, welcomed the gathering, noting that the company may be the first in India to directly cultivate on land owned by others. Sri. Chandi Oommen, MLA, urged youth to actively engage in farming, calling TIESFPC “a step toward justice for farmers.”
During the event, Reji Varghese presented the project, Thiruvanchur Radhakrishnan, MLA, released the agricultural protocol, and Chandi Oommen, MLA, inaugurated the company’s website.
Mr. Nelson P. Abraham, Working Chairman, TIESFPC, delivered the Vote of Thanks.
The event was graced by Jo Jose and Shirley Zacharias, Principal Agriculture Officers; George Kulangara, Chairman, National FPO Federation; and Chef Nalan, among others.
Together, TIESFPC aims to revive fallow lands, promote sustainable farming, and ensure safe food for all.
